Brief History of Lodge of Tradition, No 746

In 1951, Bro. Sydney Benjamin, together with W. Bro. Myer Jacobson, PSGD and W. Bro. Percy Cohen, spoke with brethren who were considering forming a new Lodge. After holding meetings at various private residences, a Formation Committee was constituted having W. Bro. Myer Jacobson, PSGD as Secretary pro tem. A Petition was completed and signed by thirty one interested Brethren and this was duly submitted to Grand Lodge.

Thereafter, informal monthly meetings were held in the form of a School of Instruction under the direction of W. Bro. Percy Cohen, to select and train those Brethren desirous of taking office. Wor Bro Leslie Heale consented to be installed as the Foundation Master.

On the 9th November, 1953 the Lodge of Tradition was consecrated in the presence of one hundred and twenty four Masons, by M. W. Bro Thomas Baillie, Pro Grand Master assisted by M. W. Bro. Dr. George Bearham, Deputy Grand Master and Grand Officers, at the Masonic Temple, High St, Malvern, under the auspices of our Sponsor Lodge, The Lodge of Judah # 20, to whom expressions of appreciation were extended for their assistance in the formation of the Lodge.

Immediately thereafter, W. Bro. Leslie Heale was installed as the Foundation Master of the Lodge which has conducted its Meetings at Malvern, East Melbourne and Gardenvale.

Over the years, the Lodge of Tradition has set a high standard in Ceremonial work of which its Members are justly proud. This was due in no small measure to the dedication of various Lecture Masters and their Assistants who were associated with the Tradition Lodge of Instruction #215, which was granted its Charter in 1956.

Meetings were originally held at the Rehearsal Room of the St. Edmond Road Centre in Prahran and later at the Moreton Ray Centre in Caulfield. Now that the Lodge is located at the Masonic Centre, Gardenvale, meetings of the Lodge of Instruction are held there on the fourth Monday of each month.

Accordingly, upon the foundation laid in 1953, The Lodge of Tradition # 746 has firmly established itself as one of the foremost and strongest Lodges in the jurisdiction and long may it continue to prosper.
